Carolina Panthers new owner, David Tepper has indicated that he’s open to hosting an expansion soccer team at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. The city is somewhat interested in this as well. Tepper could perhaps make some concessions to the city regarding soccer as part of a deal.
Charlotte was previously the subject of an MLS expansion pitch led by Speedway Motorsports president and CEO Marcus Smith, but it collapsed in 2017 because local officials pushed back against a funding model for a new stadium that called for some public funds.
Panthers are working with the local Charlotte Soccer Academy, they conducted two MLS-related focus groups on February 6. Each session did last approximately 90 minutes, and RSVP capacity has been filled in last than one hour.
I believe now Charlotte has a real chance to bring MLS. The soccer fans in the Queen city are waiting and fully agreed with the David Tepper: “something that belongs in Charlotte”.
